While teams are not putting as much emphasis on the middle linebacker position as they might have done 10 or 20 years ago, there are still a couple of good ones in this class and you do still need a reliable force at the heart of your defense to be successful in the NFL. Just ask the Baltimore Ravens or San Francisco 49ers.

And those who can affect the passing game with rush ability off the edge – think Von Miller and Aldon Smith from 2011 – are worth their weight in gold in today’s NFL and there are a few of interest in this draft as well.

The Penn State defensive end Jack Crawford was both born and raised in the same city, and continues to hold a British passport – having only moved to the States at the age of 16 to pursue his then dreams of playing basketball. At the time he had little knowledge of American football and had certainly never played the game, but seven years later he stands on the verge of the NFL.

This is where analysing the players in the upcoming NFL Draft gets a bit tricky. What constitutes a defensive lineman? Some are pure defensive ends or defensive tackles but others are hybrid defensive end/linebacker types who are hard to slot into a single position.

Either way, there are plenty of difference makers in this class and NFL scouts and coaches will select many of them in the opening round or two.

Hurricanes crowned national champions

Hertfordshire Hurricanes were crowned champions of the British Universities American Football League after recording a 37-19 victory over the Birmingham Lions in Leeds on Saturday night.

Quarterback Joe Thompson earned MVP honours as he threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another as the Hurricanes put together a very impressive offensive display against the previously undefeated Lions.

The Hurricanes finished the 2011-2012 campaign with a perfect 11-0 record after notching this big win at John Charles Stadium.
