Gerald McCoy Agrees to Terms With Buccaneers; Donald Penn Re-Signs

Buccaneers">Buccaneers/">Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik had a busy -- and expensive -- Saturday morning, agreeing to terms with the team's first-round pick, defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, and Buccaneers.com/news/article-1/Penn-on-Paper-Tackle-Gets-Long-Term-Deal/105930ad-53f0-4b7f-8319-26d108439ab1">signing restricted free-agent offensive tackle Donald Penn to a six-year deal worth a reported $43 million.

"It's a great day for the Bucs in terms of securing two players who could be very important to this organization to long-term deals," Dominik said, according to the team's website.

McCoy, the No. 3 overall pick in April's draft, should be able to make an instant impact for a Buccaneers/">Tampa Bay team that was last in the NFL against the run in 2009, while registering just 28 sacks -- only 3 1/2 of which came from defensive tackles. It's a five-year deal, and leaves Detroit's Ndamukong Suh, the No. 2 pick in the draft, as the only remaining player in the top five yet to strike a deal.

During his career at Oklahoma, McCoy recorded 14 1/2 sacks and 18 quarterback hurries to go with 33 tackles for loss.

Albert Haynesworth Takes Day Off From Conditioning Test

Albert Haynesworth apparently doesn't put much faith in the old adage, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again," After failing a conditioning drill on Thursday and Friday, which prevented him from joining the Redskins for practice, Haynesworth took Saturday off, according to multiple reports.

(Update: Mike Shanahan told reporters that Haynesworth has swelling in his knee and it's uncertain whether or not he'll be able to take the conditioning test on Sunday.)

The Redskins">Redskins defensive tackle won't be allowed to fully take part in his team's training camp until he passes a set of three 300-yard shuttle runs. Even though he hasn't gone through practice with everyone else, he's still too tired to attempt the test again. Herein may lie the problem with Haynesworth: Can his conditioning be that bad, or is it a desire issue?

Haynesworth's day of rest could simply be a result of bad advice, too. On Friday, defensive lineman Phillip Daniels submitted the opinion that the conditioning test became more difficult the more you attempted to pass it, The Free Lance-Star Redskinsjournal/2010/07/31/albert-haynesworth-rests-this-morning/">reported. Daniels said your legs tire and it becomes harder to recover.

Demaryius Thomas Signs With Denver

Demaryius Thomas agreed to a five-year deal with the Broncos">Denver Broncos on Saturday, one day before the team took to the field for training camp. Thomas, the No. 22 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, will receive $9.35 million guaranteed on his rookie contract with a max value of $15.5 million, Broncos/statuses/20018345039">according to Lindsay Jones of The Denver Post.

Thomas was the final unsigned member of Denver's draft class.

On Thursday, the Broncos signed their other 2010 first-rounder, QB Tim Tebow. The 25th overall pick in April, Tebow received a five-year contract worth $8.7 million guaranteed and $33.5 million max.

DeSean Jackson Injured, Carted Off at Eagles Camp

DeSean Jackson, who's quickly developed into a star for the Eagles">Eagles, was carted off the field during Philadelphia's training camp practice Saturday, multiple media outlets reported.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Jackson "appeared to injure his back" while catching a pass from Kevin Kolb. He was then helped off the field by trainers and carted to the locker room. The Eagles">Eagles confirmed that Jackson had injured his back and said he would be reevaluated.

"He'll be all right. It wasn't anything that serious," LB Omar Gaither told the Philadelphia Daily News. "Obviously, they're gonna take the full precaution, but he'll be fine."

While Jackson's injury doesn't sound overly serious at first blush, any lasting issue for the third-year WR would be troublesome for Philadelphia. Jackson's been a major offensive threat for the Eagles since they drafted him out of Cal in 2008 -- he hauled in 62 passes that season, then matched the number in 2009. He bumped his touchdown total from two in his rookie season up to nine last year, plus averaged more than 15 yards per punt return on 29 attempts.

Joe Haden, Browns Come to Terms

Cornerback Joe Haden, the No. 7 overall pick in April's draft, agreed to terms with the Browns">Cleveland Browns on a five-year deal worth $50 million max, according to NFL.com's Jason La Canfora. Haden's rookie contract includes a reported $26 million guaranteed and a $12 million signing bonus.

Haden was the top cornerback selected in the 2010 NFL Draft. Safety Eric Berry, taken fifth overall by Kansas City, received a six-year, $60 million contract with $34 million guaranteed.

Haden was not present at Cleveland's opening training camp workout Saturday morning, but was expected to join the team in time for its second session later in the day.

Dez Bryant Injury Has Jerry Jones Irked

The Cowboys/">Dallas-Cowboys">Cowboys/">Dallas Cowboys were the first team to open training camp. They were also the first to suffer a potentially significant injury.

Rookie wide receiver Dez Bryant went down with an ankle injury during practice Friday. There are reports Bryant may have a dreaded high ankle sprain, and he could be out up to six weeks, which would put into serious question his availability for the regular season opener.

That injury occurred late in practice, something that has Cowboys/">Dallas-Cowboys">Cowboys owner Jerry Jones singing the blues.

Lions President Tom Lewand Suspended 30 Days, Fined $100K

The NFL has suspended Detroit-lions">Detroit Lions President Tom Lewand for 30 days and fined him $100,000 as a result of his drunk driving arrest and subsequent guilty plea, as Commissioner Roger Goodell shows once again that he's serious about holding all league employees to high standards in their personal conduct.

In this case, Goodell was even tougher on Lewand than he usually is on players: The DUI was Lewand's first offense under the league's personal-conduct policy, and NFL players typically aren't disciplined for first DUI offenses.

"You occupy a special position of responsibility and trust, and - as you have publicly acknowledged - your conduct must be consistent with someone in that position," Goodell told Lewand in a letter that has been released publicly.

Lewand released a statement of his own saying, "I remain committed to accepting all of the consequences of my actions, including those in the commissioner's decision. I am deeply grateful for the support I have received."

Lewand's suspension will run from Aug. 25 to Sept. 24, which means he won't be involved in the end of the preseason, the formulation of the final 53-man regular season roster, and the first couple weeks of the regular season. That's an important part of the year for a team president to miss, and that makes this a significant suspension.

And it's a suspension that Goodell was right to hand down. Goodell has built his reputation on getting tough with NFL players, and team executives need to know that he'll hold them accountable as well.

Roger Goodell: Lambeau Field Could Host a Super Bowl, but Green Bay Can’t

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell went to Packers/">Green Bay for a question-and-answer session with Packers">Packers fans Thursday and was asked whether Lambeau Field could become the second outdoor, cold-weather stadium to host a Super Bowl, after the new Giants">Giants/Jets">Jets stadium in New Jersey becomes the first.

Goodell said he'd love to see a Super Bowl at Lambeau Field, and he has no problem with a Super Bowl being played in the snow. But while the Frozen Tundra would be great for the game itself, it wouldn't work because Packers/">Green Bay just isn't big enough for the big game.

"It's not about weather as much as it is infrastructure," Goodell said. "You need 25,000 hotel rooms within 60 miles. It's an extraordinary undertaking."

And considering that Packers/">Green Bay has only 3,000 hotel rooms, there's no chance of it happening. Even a setup that featured most of the media and entertainment activities the week before the Super Bowl taking place in Milwaukee wouldn't be feasible for how big an event the Super Bowl has become.
