NFL Players, Owners Prepare for Battle

NFL players held their annual meeting last weekend in Hawaii. It is the owners' turn beginning this weekend in Orlando.

The sides have negotiated often over the last year about what is required to create a new labor agreement, one that will ensure football beyond the 2010 season. These annual meetings give both the occasion to learn privately where they stand and crystallize strategies.

Here is what the players want the owners to conclude by the time their sessions end on Wednesday: If owners agreed to open their financial books, a new long-term labor agreement could likely be reached before the September season kickoff.

The chance owners will agree to that in Orlando? Zero.

Without it, the way players view chances of a looming 2011 lockout? Infinitely.

"The owners tell us the business model of the NFL is broken," said an NFL player who represented his team at the Hawaii meetings. "If your financial situation is that dire, what's the holdup in showing us? Owners say trust us. That's like buying a car without looking under the hood. These are the same guys who fight us tooth and nail for injury grievances, and we're just going to trust that they're hurting like they say? Show us the finances and we can get a deal done in days. That's the biggest hang-up. It sounds so simple. It has been hard to do."

Derek Anderson, Cardinals Reach Deal

Derek Anderson is, somehow, the biggest castoff in the embarrassingly poor rotation of Cleveland quarterbacks that were/are under consideration: Jake Delhomme, Seneca Wallace, Brady-quinn/8276">Brady Quinn and Anderson were the options.

So, considering that he was the only remaining team-less player on that list, things were not looking so hot for the former Pro Bowler. But suddenly, things appear to have turned around, as reports indicate that Anderson will be headed to Arizona to compete with Matt Leinart for the role of "Tiny Foot in Kurt Warner's Giant Shoes."

As first reported by Darren Urban on Twitter, via KTAR Sports 620, Cardinals.com/news-and-events/article-1/Anderson-The-Newest-Cards-QB/a1d7db77-4487-4f50-bf21-34c24e2f43f0">Anderson has agreed to a two-year deal with the Cardinals.

Frankly, it's a smart signing. Anderson isn't a lock-job franchise quarterback, of course, but he's had success in the past. That success was with the Browns">Browns, who are a much worse team, at least in terms of offensive weapons, than the Cards.

And with Leinart being a total question mark at this point, Anderson provides a somewhat tenuous (albeit lightly dusted with upside) safety net and, hopefully for Ken Wisenhunt, some motivation for the former first-rounder to finally live up to expectations.

Titans, Falcons Look to Be Big Compensatory Pick Winners

When it comes to predicting the compensatory draft picks, blogger AdamJT13 is a maestro. The NFL has never released its formula for how compensatory picks are awarded, but by reverse engineering past year's picks, AdamJT13 has come very close to cracking the NFL's code.

We won't get the official announcement of compensatory picks until next week, but if Adam's predictions are correct it will be a nice windfall for the Titans">Titans and Falcons">Falcons.

Haden Helps Himself; Spikes Falls Flat at Florida’s Pro Day

The focus of Florida's pro day was Tim Tebow's reworked delivery, but Wednesday's workout may have been even more important for a pair of Tebow's Gator teammates.

For cornerback Joe Haden, Wednesday will likely earn him a couple of million dollars, while linebacker Brandon Spikes likely lost hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Haden came into Wednesday's pro day needing to prove that he wasn't as slow as he showed at the NFL Scouting Combine. Spikes didn't run at the scouting combine, and he came into pro day needing to knock down rumors that he was hesitant to run because of his lack of speed.

Saints in the Super Bowl." src="http://www.blogcdn.com/nfl.fanhouse.com/media/2010/03/gyi0059433007.jpg" />In a move that will be hailed as salvation by people who enjoy complaining about things that aren't actual problems, the NFL is moving toward changing its overtime rules from sudden death to...well, something that makes far less sense.

The NFL's competition committee will submit what it's calling a "modified sudden death" proposal to owners at next week's league meetings in Orlando, and it 75 percent of the teams approve the new plan, overtime rules will be changed for next year's playoffs and Super Bowl. Under the proposed change, the team that possesses the ball first in overtime could still win the game on its first possession -- but only if it scores a touchdown. If the team that gets the ball first kicks a field goal on its first possession, it would then have to kick off, and the opposing team would get a chance to tie or win the game. If that team then kicks a field goal to tie the game, the format reverts to sudden death from that point.

Redskins Add QB Rex Grossman

The Redskins">Washington Redskins announced Wednesday morning the signing of free-agent quarterback Rex Grossman to a deal. Details of the contract were not immediately available.

Grossman spent last season in Houston, where he played in an offense run by Kyle Shanahan, who left his post as Texans">Texans offensive coordinator to take the same position in Washington.

Grossman threw just nine passes in 2009, completing three of them. He did help the Chicago-Chicago-bears/">Bears">Chicago-bears/">Bears to the Super Bowl in the 2006 season, starting every game -- he posted a QB rating of 73.9 that regular season. But an injury the next year limited him to seven starts, and he then made just one start in 2008 before leaving Chicago for Houston.

Tomlinson reveals motivation

The Buffalo-Buffalo-bills/">Bills">Buffalo Buffalo-bills/">Bills have finally signed an impact free agent.

Linebacker Andra Davis, who spent 2009 with the Broncos">Denver Broncos, signed with the Buffalo-Buffalo-bills/">Bills">Buffalo-bills/">Bills on Tuesday. Davis first told Josina Anderson of Fox 31 in Denver that it's a done deal.

"I'm very excited and glad this process is over with," Davis said. "Now I can focus on getting my wife and my kids out here, finding a school, finding a place to stay, getting started and then working out with the guys."

New Buffalo-bills/">Bills defensive coordinator George Edwards has said he'll switch to a 3-4 defense, and Davis's experience in the 3-4 should make him a good fit in Buffalo.

Eagles, Mike Bell Agree to Offer Sheet

Philadelphia has agreed to a one-year deal with restricted free agent running back Mike Bell, according to multiple reports.

New Orleans, which placed a "right of first refusal" tender on Bell, has seven days to match the Eagles">Eagles' offer or let Bell walk. That level tender does not come with any compensation, meaning that the Saints">Saints would receive no draft picks from the Eagles in return for Bell.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and Scout.com's Adam Caplan both reported that the Eagles have offered Bell $1.7 million with incentives that could push the contract above $2 million for 2010. According to Caplan, Bell would receive $500,000 of that in guaranteed money.
